The Ultimate Backpacking Game: Will it all fit?

My Rucksack, full to the brim.

My Rucksack, full to the brim

Today I had the pleasure of playing the ultimate backpacking game: Will it all fit?

That’s the game where you try and shove every last bit of clothing and equipment into your rucksack the day before you’re due to set off.

Overall I think I did quite well, it all fit… just.

The reason I think I managed to fit it all in?

Mainly, I read various guides on what to pack, the best being What to Pack.

The guide provides useful advice like, what clothes to bring, how to handle laundry on the road and what should be avoided.

What also helped was: not listening to my parents, whose advice mainly consisted of “that rucksack’s not big enough, I’d take that on a weekend away”.

In the end I’m just happy it all fits, If i need more stuff I can always buy it on the road.

For anyone interested, my packing list ended up as:

The New Zealand Diet

So in an effort to lose weight, I’ve decided to take a year long trip to New Zealand!

Ok, so that’s not completely true.

I am going to New Zealand, and it is for a year, but I’m not doing it to lose weight… although it would be great if I managed to shed a few pounds along the way.

I’m going to New Zealand to take a break after education so I can explore and try fun stuff before I end up with a 9-5 desk job, spending my days twiddling my thumbs and waiting for retirement (I hope that doesn’t happen).

Anyway, as a result I’ve created The New Zealand Diet where I will write about my journey and anything else that comes to mind, so stick around!
